London, England

Londinium was established as a civilian town by the Romans about four years after the invasion of AD 43. London, like Rome, was founded on the point of the river where it was narrow enough to bridge and the strategic location of the city provided easy access to much of Europe.

Day trip from London to the area called Cotswold.

Great Day Tour (click link to go to tour details page)

Per Wikipedia

“The area is defined by the bedrock of Jurassic limestone that creates a type of grassland habitat rare in the UK and that is quarried for the golden-coloured Cotswold stone. The predominantly rural landscape contains stone-built villages, towns, and stately homes and gardens featuring the local stone.

Designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in 1966, the Cotswolds covers 787 square miles (2,038 km2) and, after the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales national parks, is the third largest protected landscape in England.”

We head out on a 16 passenger minibus.  David is our guide, he is originally from a small village in Northern Ireland but now lives in London!  Dude is very knowledgeable and funny to boot.  He was able to change his accent to each area in England Scotland and Wales.

First stop is Burford.

Per Google “Burford is one of the most picturesque towns in England with its famous High Street rising up from the church and river. There are a number of free downloadable walks available.”

Well duh…. The village is beautiful and people quite Friendly.

Very quaint and peaceful.

I have a scone at a local café…Café…. WOW best ever.

(Side note: I just discovered scones thanks to a Friend, so that was only my third scone ever LOL!!)

Next stop Bibury

Per Google “The 19th-century artist and craftsman William Morris called Bibury “the most beautiful village in England” when he visited it. The village is known for its honey-coloured 17th-century stone cottages with steeply pitched roofs, which once housed weavers who supplied cloth for fulling at nearby Arlington Mill.”

These cottages are still used by everyday people.

What a beautiful serene place.  It’s a painting.  Difficult to capture the whole perfect scene.

There is a fish that is in workin order along with a beautiful garden.  Such plush and green!  Bright colored flowers!

Next stop, Burton on the water

Per Google “Bourton-on-the-Water is a village in the rural Cotswolds area of south central England. Straddling the River Windrush, it’s known for its low bridges and traditional stone houses.”

Another picture perfect village.   Gorgeous views of stone buildings and green landscape with a canal to top off the view.  Beautiful day as everyone is enjoying being outside!

Last stop

Stow on the wold

Per Wikipedia “Stow-on-the-Wold is a market town and civil parish in Gloucestershire, England, on top of an 800-foot hill at the junction of main roads through the Cotswolds, including the Fosse Way, which is of Roman origin. The town was founded by Norman lords to absorb trade from the roads converging there”

Oldest inn -the porch house!

This was a great introduction to the Cotswolds, but I think staying here for 3 nights and exploring more villages in depth is advised!  I will definitely put this on the list to come back!

July 15, 2022 – Day trip to Hampton Court Palace

The original Tudor Hampton Court Palace was begun by Cardinal Wolsey in the early 16th century, but it soon attracted the attention of Henry VIII, who brought all his six wives here. Surrounded by gorgeous gardens and famous features such as the Maze and the Great Vine, the palace has been the setting for many nationally important events.

When William III and Mary II (1689-1702) took the throne in 1689, they commissioned Sir Christopher Wren to build an elegant new baroque palace. Later, Georgian kings and princes occupied the splendid interiors. When the royals left in 1737, impoverished ‘grace and favour’ aristocrats moved in.

Queen Victoria opened the palace to the public in 1838. It has remained a magnet for millions of visitors, drawn to the grandeur, the ghosts and the fabulous art collection.

These pictures are well worth the time to look through!!!
