Slovenia

“Wine is the most civilized thing in the world.” — Ernest Hemingway.

  • Slovenia, a country in Central Europe, is known for its mountains, ski resorts and lakes. On Lake Bled, a glacial lake fed by hot springs, the town of Bled contains a church-topped islet and a cliffside medieval castle. In Ljubljana, Slovenia’s capital, baroque facades mix with the 20th-century architecture of native Jože Plečnik, whose iconic Tromostovje (Triple Bridge) spans the tightly curving Ljubljanica River.

Slovenians love to eat and drink.  For such a small country they have lots of restaurants and wineries.  Even at 10pm on Tuesday night with the weather cold and rainy the restaurants had people on the patios!  Food and eating with family and Friends is a part of their culture!

They have an outdoor market 6 days a week.   Rain or shine… local people get their fruits and vegetables from the market.   I also heard they do an outdoor food kitchen every Friday when it’s not raining.   Unfortunately it rained the Friday I was here!  So I must come back!
Great walking city Tour I took.(Click on link for details)
Wines!
Majority of the wine they produce is consumed locally.    They make an Orange wine that is made with white wine grapes but processed like a Red wine!  Very nice!  Wine tasting experience with Boris was awesome.  So proud and knowledgeable about the wines!  The tasting was in a 300 year cellar… we even tasted a wine that included the oldest grapes in the world.
We learned that grapes are ever changing as they die off after a while and wine makers start using a different variety or different plants…. but this particular grape has survived!

The oldest known grape-producing vine is a Žametovka vine growing in Maribor in Slovenia, which is known to have been alive in the 17th century; it produces only about 35 to 55 kilograms (77 to 121 lb) of grapes each year, which is fermented and put into about 100 miniature bottles.
Day trip to Lake Bled and the coastal city of Piran
Private tour… we stop at a Lakeview Cafe to have a cappuccino and their local cake.   Very good.  We toured the castle as well which had great views of the lake area and the hosts did a cool dance for us!

Then we head towards the coast.  Piran is a lovely coastal town where we can see Italy and Croatia across the water!

Walking around Ljubljana you don’t see any homeless people
The streets are clean and the city just felt super safe!  Great place for solo travel.   Young people can go to University free of charge!  Everyone speaks the native language but everyone is also required to learn another language so most people speak English and or Italian.  Slovenia got their independence from Yugoslavia in 1991 so they are a young country with a rich history

Architecture is very Italian and Austrian.   Parts of the country reminds you of Italy or Vienna or even Prague!

Last note!  The people are warm friendly and seem very Happy!  Especially with a glass of wine!

On the way back from the Day tour to Lake Bled and Piran the tour guide stopped at a wine fountain!!!  For 12 Euros, taste 6 premium wines with amazing views!

Arriving into the capitol city of Ljubljana Slovenia… I head to my airbnb 4th floor apartment overlooking the the River…. amazing views.
